Said to have been planted by HIRAI Raidō (Kyogaku Raidō) who was chief priest of Hōren-ji temple, the trees are around 150 years in age.
The trees have also been designated Natural Monuments by Kumakōgen-chō.
Their blossoms which bloom in beautiful forms offer a palpable sense of the spring to come in the town after the long, cold winter has drawn to a close.
After-dark illuminations are also held, presenting the blossoms in wondrous forms to allow visitors to enjoy an atmosphere altogether different from the daytime.
